What is the Best Herb to Grow in a Pot?

Posted on June 15, 2021

What is the best herb to grow in a pot? This is a question that has occupied the minds of many for hundreds of years. With all the choices available today, it can be a bit difficult to decide. There are herbs that are best to be planted from seed, grown in large containers, and then harvested and dried. There are also those that need to be started from seeds, be grown in small containers and then transplanted outdoors when the weather permits.

The question “what is the best herb to grow in a pot?” can be answered in a few different ways. The herbs that have the best survival rate and ability to thrive in your climate are called perennial herbs. These herbs will grow for one year and then die for good. Perennial herbs such as basil, dill, oregano, parsley, sage, chives and thyme are some that will last several years if they are well cared for.

Those herbs that you can plant and have them thrive for two or three years and then die for the same reason, that is, they are being overwatered. The best herb to grow in a pot will be one that you can transplant outside when the weather is warm and have the roots go down below the soil line and stay there. This is not necessary for annuals, although you might try it if you grow more than a handful of herbs. Many of the perennial herbs can be divided into two categories, the annuals and the perennials. Annual herbs such as marjoram, basil, sage, chives and thyme are great for beginners as they are easy to grow and don’t need much maintenance once they are established.

Perennials, on the other hand, are those herbs that will last for two growing seasons. They include dill, coriander, mint, dill, fennel, Rosemary, tarragon, oregano and thyme. These herbs will do better if they are planted up higher so they can get the sunlight they need. Since these herbs tend to flower and die quickly, it is important to replant them every few years so they get all the sun they need.

The best herb to grow in a pot is one that is going to attract bees and other insects to your garden. Some of these herbs include alfalfa, bee balm, coltsfoot, clover, devil’s claw, goldenrod, mint, Myrtle, oasis, peony, ragweed, sodulus, and spirea. These are just a few to mention. There are many others that are great choices as well so before you plant any of them, make sure to check out what the local flower garden suppliers have available.

When buying pots for your herbs, be sure to pay attention to how deep they go. Some pots only go a few inches deep, while others can go three feet or more. This will depend on the plant you want to grow. Another thing to look at is the size of the pot since different plants have different needs when it comes to size.

When you are looking for pots for your herbs to grow in, be sure to take into consideration how much sun exposure your herbs will get. Sunlight is what the herbs need to grow in order to be healthy. Different herbs will need more sun than others. If you want your herbs to grow faster, then you need to give them more sunlight. It may take more sunlight than what you think though depending on the herbs you are growing.

If you want to be able to harvest your herbs easily, then you need to pick the herbs before they bloom. Harvesting them before they open up will help the plants from taking up too much space in the pot and the plants won’t be so crowded out. Pick your herbs before they start to bloom to be sure that the flowers are nice and tall. Some types of herbs will only bloom for a few days after you picked them. If you want to be able to pick the best ones to grow in a pot, then pay close attention to these things.
