How to Make a Flower Wall in the Garden

Posted on June 28, 2021

A flower wall can look very simple but it is often easy to overlook just how many things need to be carefully considered. If you have a large area of flower-free lawn then it may be time to install a flower wall. A flower wall or trellis can give the appearance of being a large and costly expanse of greenery but in fact it only takes a little planning. Once you learn how to make a flower wall in the garden, you’ll see just how easy it is to do.

When planning how to make a flower wall in the garden, consider where you will be planting the flower. Some flower species are more suited for larger areas than others. Roses can be quite large and will flower well on a flower wall that spans several feet across. Daisies can grow to quite a size and blooms at the base of a flower wall. Plant these taller varieties in loose soil to conserve water and plant taller ones in a dense sunny garden for a grand looking display.

One thing to remember before planting is to set aside a period of time when your flower bed is not planted. This can be anytime from a couple of weeks to two months before planting. This allows the flower to acclimate to its new surroundings. It also gives time for the area to drain so the soil does not become soggy. If you are planting the flower near other plants, it’s a good idea to mulch the area to help the roots of other garden plants.

Another important factor to keep in mind when learning how to make a flower wall in the garden is the color. There are specific colors for each flower species. You can get specific colors from books or online and you may even find special flower varieties that are only available that way. Try to use as many different colors as possible because your flower collection will end up being much more interesting when it has a diverse range of colors.

It’s also beneficial to make sure you have good lighting when displaying your flower wall art. Choose bulbs that will bloom for a few years and then just turn them over and give them another bloom. You don’t want to accidentally damage your flower wall because you were trying to direct the light. The result could be uneven flower colors or crooked blooms.

When learning how to make a flower wall in the garden, there are many great things you can add to your existing garden that will compliment the flower wall. If you have a trellis or gazebo then you can take the entire trellis and wrap it around the base of the flower wall. You could also use some outdoor lights. The addition of some outdoor lighting will really bring out the beauty of the flower wall art.

Flowers also come in many different shapes and sizes. If you have a smaller garden and have limited space then you might consider designing a flower wall that is only three feet tall. The flowers would simply come out of the center of the wall and would be placed around the area where you wanted them to be. This option does not allow for as much design flexibility but will still look amazing.

You can make a flower wall in the garden even more interesting by choosing one or two main colors and then building up the rest of the garden around those two colors. You could build a circle of greenery from green to white to bright yellow and orange. You could then build up one side of the garden and include a white rose bush. As you work on how to make a flower wall in the garden continue to expand the size of the flower wall as you work on developing the rest of the garden. Just keep adding to the wall until it looks like a real bouquet of flowers.
